My name is Manjunath but everyone calls me Manju. On the left is a picture of me at home in South India with my Mum.
I trained as a yoga teacher in the foothills of the Indian Himalaya. I also met my Jersey born wife deep in the Indian Himalayas near the border with Tibet. That is a very dramatic story which an Indian astrologer told me as a child and a Tibetan astrologer told my wife in much more detail the year before we met! So the Himalayas are very special for me. I believe that they shaped my life by confirming my life purpose (to teach yoga) and introducing me to my wife (my soul mate).
I am registered with Yoga Alliance as a 500 E-RTY yoga teacher which is currently the highest level a teacher can register for with this organisation. This means that they have verified that I completed a minimum of 500-hour yoga teacher training by a school that is registered with them and that I have taught a minimum of 2000 hours over four years. I have in fact taken many hours more training (including many trainings in India and also in the UK with Judith Lasater (author of “Restful Yoga for Stressful Times") and Jo Manuel (author of "The Spiritual Teachings of Yoga") and taught many, many thousands more hours.
I was not born in the Himalaya but thousands of kilometres away on my family land in Karnataka in South India. When I was growing up we had to walk nearly an hour through dense jungle to get to the next house. There was no electricty, no roads and no hospitals in the area only dense jungle full of antelopes, cheetahs, monkeys, brightly coloured birds and lots of snakes! I am so grateful I had the opportunity to live so close to nature.
Although it is still a very remote area, now there is electricity, roads connecting the tea and coffee plantations and a very large and well regarded ayurvedic (herbal) hospital and research centre. Fortunately the area is protected by the Forest Department which means there is no illegal logging or hunting so the jungle trees grow freely and the animals wander without fear. I have lived in Jersey for over 9 years now but I visit India at least once a year to spend time with my family and to study and practice yoga. This is a picture of me in the Indian Himalaya buying blankets from Tibetan refugees for my yoga classes in Jersey.
At the moment my greatest pleasure is to introduce a beginner / someone whose yoga practice has previously been incomplete to a complete and well balanced practice that includes, breath practices, yoga poses, relaxation and visualisation techniques, meditation and other yogic practices. This brings me and them happiness and makes my commitment to teach stronger.
All my classes are suitable for beginners. Many of my students in Jersey have been coming to a weekly class for the last 9 years and can go quite deep into their practice. I tailor every class to the students I see in front of me and what I feel they need on a particular day.
Although this qualification allows me to teach other yoga teachers and to train others to become teachers this is not the path that I want to follow at the moment. Coming from India and having known of great yoga masters I know that I am not ready for this responsibility and there are many deeper aspects of yoga that I am only beginning to understand myself. If you are teaching yourself or think of yourself as an advanced student, you should consider looking for a teacher who is offering advanced classes.
Whilst I am happy to teach existing students if they become pregnant. If you know you are pregnant and you are looking to start a yoga class, I strongly recommend that you find a prenatal yoga class.
